Verhicle Burglary at Sugar-Salem High School
On 5-26-2010 detectives responded to a vehicle burglary in the parking lot of the high school. During the burglary a laptop computer was stolen. Detectives and the School Resource Officer reviewed the video footage from security cameras and located evidence of the criminal activity. At approximatley 4:00 pm today detectives arrested Kristopher William Swaner, age 24, from Rigby Idaho. Kristopher was booked into the Madison County Jail on one count of burglary.
The Sheriff's Office would like to remind people to please lock their vehicle doors. Taking a little extra time to secure valuable property out of sight when leaving it unattended might also save them some damage to their vehicle.

Electrical Wiring Theft Arrest
Over the last several weeks the Madison County Sheriff’s has taken multiple reports of burglary from farms shops around the bench area east of Rexburg. During the burglaries several thousand dollars worth of electrical wiring used to operate farm machinery was stolen. A great deal of damage was also associated with these crimes. Reports were also taken in Jefferson and Fremont and Bonneville Counties. On Thursday May 6^th detectives responded to three more Burglary reports. On the same day patrol deputies with Madison County located a campsite in the Heise area in which they found piles of the same type of cords being burned to expose the copper wiring. Detectives with Madison and Bonneville County set up surveillance and waited for the owners of the campsite to return. During the investigation Michael Shane Rasmussen age 44 from Idaho Falls, Garrett Dean Chaffin age 47 from Shelly and a male Juvenile were arrested on multiple counts of Burglary and Grand Theft. Both Chaffin and Rasmussen were booked into the Madison County Jail and the Juvenile was taken to Five County Detention. Detectives with Madison Major Crimes, Fremont County, Jefferson County and Bonneville County have been working this case. The electrical wiring is being stolen and the casing burned off and it is being turned into recycling plants and salvage yards for cash.
The Sheriff’s Office would like to remind everyone as the weather is warming up to pay better attention to their personal property. Farms and other businesses that deals with copper, steel and aluminum that can be used for salvage should pay extra attention to secure their machinery and report any suspicious behavior.

Drunk Man Arrested for Driving on Wrong Side of Highway 20
On 4-11-2010 at approximately 1:50 a.m., deputies with the Madison County Sheriff's Office and an officer with the Rexburg Police Department stopped a vehicle on US 20 for traveling south bound in the north bound lanes of travel. During the traffic stop deputies found that the driver, Dustin Campbell from McCall Idaho, had just come from the Island Park area. During the investigation Deputies determined Dustin Campbell's Blood BAC was .265. Dustin was also driving a vehicle that was reported stolen earlier in the day. Dustin Campbell was booked into the Madison County jail for excessive DUI, possession of stolen property and cited for driving the wrong side of a highway. The Sheriff's Office is grateful that nobody was hurt and hopes this type of incident serves as a reminder to the dangers of drinking and driving and how excessive alcohol consumption effects decision making.

Deputies Arrest 3 in Vehicle Burglary Case in Sugar City
   It didn't take long for Madison County deputies to catch some thieves Friday afternoon. A vehicle burglary was reported at 12:45 p.m. and within minutes deputies had surveillance video from Sugar Jr. High where the burglary happened.
   Deputies say they canvassed the area and found the suspects' car about three blocks from the school. When somebody got in the car and left the house, deputies pulled them over. They found a stolen IPod, a camera, and cash that belonged to the victim.
   They arrested Faustino Hernandez, 20, and two male juveniles. Hernandez was arrested for vehicle burglary and booked into the Madison County Jail. Both juveniles were taken to Five County Detention. One is charged with vehicle burglary, the other with a probation violation.
   Detectives are now seeing if any other cases are connected.
   The sheriff's office says it's important to lock you car doors and don't leave items in plain sight or unattended.
