Community Policing Division
The Community Policing Officer is responsible for special events and programs that the Sheriff’s Office has to offer. The first program is the Explorers, which is for young people from the ages of 14 to 21 who are interested in Law Enforcement as a possible future career. Explorers are able to experience the field of Law Enforcement firsthand and are able to ride along with the Patrolmen of the Sheriff’s Office. Explorers will be trained on the many aspects of the job from traffic stops to arrest techniques. Come and join the fun at Explorers Post 411. This is a free program provided by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.
Another fun program our Community Policing Officer is responsible for is the Sheriff’s Office Youth Camp. This is a week long day camp held during the month of June. The camp is for kids 12 to 18 year old. From 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day, the kids take on a new aspect of Law Enforcement. One of the fun activities is at the firearms range where the youth get to shoot weapons consisting of pistols to fully automatic M-15 rifles and other weapons used by the SWAT team. Explorers will also learn how to reconstruct a vehicle collision and determine speeds of a vehicle from the skid marks left behind. Next they will get to learn from the Detectives and see how they use all there tools, which include the finger print imager, computer forensics tools, and surveillance equipment. On the last day there is a BBQ and the kids also learn water rescue techniques in the river near Beaver Dick Park.
The Community Policing Officer also teaches the Alive at 25 Defensive Driving Course which is for young drivers between the ages of 15 to 24. In this course students will learn how to recognize the hazards of the road, understand the defense to avoid the hazards, and act correctly in time when there is a hazard suddenly placed in front of you. They will also learn about how to avoid distractions in the vehicle from friends, cell phones, and even falling asleep. This is a free course and students receive a certificate of completion from the National Safety Council upon completion.
The Community Policing Officer has additional responsibilities such as teaching drug prevention programs such as Dare, organizing bike rodeos, block parties, and the Neighborhood Watch Program and assisting with the Demolition Derby and the County Fair.
